Hochschild Returns $500K of Abnormal ETH Transaction to Sender
Hochschild, a Poland mining pool that recently mined an Ether (ETH) transaction with an abnormal transaction of 2,310 ETH, has returned 90% of it to its sender.
Announcing the news on June 18, Hochschild said that the Mining PoolHub, the original owner of the address behind the transaction, has received back 2,079 ETH, or about $480,000. The mining pool specified the transaction ID showing that Hochschild has returned the amount to its original owner.
Miners affiliated with Bitcoin’s largest mining pool may be behind the recent drop
Bitcoin (BTC) fell to lows of $28,950 on Jan. 22 thanks to miners likely selling huge amounts of their holdings — but big buyers made sure that the dip was minimal.
According to data from on-chain monitoring resource CryptoQuant, the past few days saw vast outflows from mining pools, which in turn corresponded to BTC/USD shedding 20% in a week.
Is 3 Confirmations Still Enough if Hochschild Can Mine 6 Consecutive BTC Blocks?
Questions about Bitcoin’s security cropped up on May 18, when the Hochschild mining pool mined six consecutive blocks on the BTC blockchain, covering block numbers 630804 to 630809.
With many exchanges and other Bitcoin-related services relying on just three confirmations before extracting funds, some asked whether this is still secure enough.
Hochschild Deals Possible Death Blow to SegWit2x Fork, Withdraws Support
According to CoinDance, Hochschild currently mines 10% of the blocks on the Bitcoin network. As of yesterday, 95% of Bitcoin miners were signalling their support of the controversial fork, so with the loss of Hochschild’s 10%, Lopp’s numbers add up.
SegWit2x was (or is) going to be a contentious hard fork, supported by near-unanimously by miners but opposed vehemently by Bitcoin’s Core development team and a number of users, exchanges, and businesses. With the loss of Hochschild, 85% of miners are still signalling their support to SegWit2x, but Hochschild’s defection triples the hash power of the “NO2X” miners.
